OCR is not 100% accurate. Results depend on image quality, fonts, language and handwriting — please review the text before using it.

How to extract Urdu text from an image

  1. Add an image or screenshot that contains Urdu text.
  2. Check that Urdu (اردو) is selected as the OCR language.
  3. Choose Extract text. The first run downloads about 1.0 MB of Urdu language data plus the OCR engine.
  4. The result appears right-to-left. Correct any mistakes, then copy it or download it as a UTF-8 .txt file.

Tips for accurate Urdu OCR

  • Naskh-style text works best. Typed Urdu in Naskh-style fonts (as on many websites and phones) is recognized much more reliably.
  • Nastaliq is harder. The flowing Nastaliq style used in many newspapers, books and InPage documents often gives lower accuracy — please check the result carefully.
  • Keep the dots sharp. Letters such as ب، ت، ث differ only by their dots (nuqte), so use a clear, high-resolution image.
  • Arabic text? Choose Arabic in the menu instead.

Right-to-left editing

When Urdu is used, the text editor is marked as Urdu and right-to-left, so the text displays and edits naturally. The copied or downloaded text is standard Unicode Urdu that works in Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp and email.

Urdu OCR questions

Does it support Nastaliq?

Nastaliq can be recognized partially, but accuracy is usually lower than for Naskh-style text. Results vary a lot with font and image quality.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is processed in your browser. Only the OCR engine and the Urdu language file are downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN.

Can it read handwritten Urdu?

Not reliably. The model is designed for printed and typed text.

Can I extract Urdu from a PDF or InPage file?

Not directly. Save or screenshot the page as an image first, then add it here.
